Mapping Tutorial : Page 3

Textures :

For beginners, I would stick to the original Half-Life textures until you want to get a bit more adventurous. You add them to your Hammer 'Palate'  by going to the textures tab on the options menu.  All the necessary textures for beginners should be added from the folder

C:Sierra/Half-Life/Valve/...

All textures for Half-Life come with the .wad file attachment. Ones that you should certainly add to your list are the
halflife.wad and the decals.wad. You don't really need the liquids.wad or the xeno.wad until you want to experiment more.

Other .wad files can be downloaded from the Wadfather - www.planethalflife/wadfather/
But you don't need them yet.

Another thing to do - go to the Half-Life Compile Controller and under the 'PARAMS A' tab select 'NOWADTEXTURES' in the CSG menu - this means that when you compile your maps the textures are built into it. By the way, this is not essential, but it is VERY helpful in the future when you obtain more and more .wad files. You don't really need to change the textures list in the top right, but what you do need to do is to add the following file in the 'PARAMS B' tab under the 'lights' filename :

C:\Program Files\Valve Hammer Editor\tools\valve.rad

This ensures that texture lighting will work in the future (VERY HELPFUL).
